SETTING
The Silk Scarf is a short story by Ahmed Essop; the story took place at theOriental Plaza in Johannesburg 'South Africa '; at a shopping center where the shops are owed by Indian people. The plazza developed as a result of the apartheid government's Group Act, after being evicted from Page view. Indian shopkeepers were eventually allowed to set up their shops in the Plaza area.

The main character is a medium height South African lady; Mrs. Nebo, with a heavy loins and a smooth skin. She is a friendly lady and a wife to Clive Nebo, who is a Foreign Affairs Minister in the new government. She is a beautiful lady dressed in designer clothing and expensive jewelry. Mrs. Nebo lives in Houghton and owns a Mercedes Benz as well as Escorts that are always with her.

Is an Indian shopkeeper, who works in a boutique. He is very much dedicated in his rules which say “no credit, no cheque, and cash only. He is very stubborn and will not give in to anyone's idea on how to run his shop. However he treats all his costumers the same and does not care about their social standards.

PLOT SUMMARY
Mrs. Nebo and her friend Margaret entered the Plaza in Mercedes Benz that is driven by chauffeurs. After emerging from the car with the escorts they went to a few Indian shops doing some shopping because they where on a shopping expedition, after buying some shoes, jewelry and swimming costumes, Mrs. Nebo saw a lovely Indian dress in a window shop. They went in and after paying for the garment, she asked if they don't have a sill scarf to match the garment. They went from shop to shop looking for a scarf. She than came to a boutique where she found a silk scarf that matched her garment and decided to buy the scarf. Mine while just to realize that she was fifteen rand short, to bad for her, she wanted to give a cheque instead but the shopkeeper has rules, that he does not accept cheque only cash and he will not go beyond his rules for anyone no matter their social standards. His rules where set to everyone and no body could change his mind otherwise. Mrs. Nebo wanted the scarf so badly she will not leave the shop with out it. An argument broke out; later when a few shopkeepers realized who she is and did not want their shops to be destroyed again; they decided to buy the scarf and present it to Mrs. Nebo as a gift. She was very pleased with the gift but made a comment to the boutique owner that there is no place for people like him in the new DemocraticSouth Africa .
